What each price tier buys

Use these ranges to interpret a listing rather than as a quote. Whenever a price sits well under its tier, the useful question is what was left out.

Under 800No testing, no verifiable pedigree, often an accidental litter or a rehomingHigh
800 to 1,500Registered parents, limited or no testing, pet or mixed linesModerate to high

The arithmetic that settles it.

Hip dysplasia surgery starts near 4,000 dollars per side. Saving 1,500 dollars on a puppy whose parents were never x rayed is a wager against a condition this breed is prone to. Win and you saved 1,500. Lose and you are 6,500 behind with a dog in pain.

First year costs on top of the puppy

Budget 2,000 to 3,500 dollars in year one. Vaccinations, spay or neuter, quality food for a large growing dog, crate and equipment, and structured training all fall inside twelve months. Training is the line people cut and the one that determines the next nine years.

The ten year figure

Plan on 18,000 to 30,000 dollars over a decade. Food alone for an 80 pound working dog runs 800 to 1,400 dollars a year at appropriate quality. Routine veterinary care, dental work, emergencies, boarding, and replacement gear account for the rest.

Against that total, the gap between a tested and an untested puppy disappears. That is the whole argument for buying well.

Deposits and payment

Deposits of 300 to 1,000 dollars are normal for holding a waitlist position, and paying before a litter is born is standard practice. The terms need to be written: what it holds, what happens if the pairing fails, refundability, and whether it rolls forward.

Pay by a method that leaves a record. A cash only demand on a 3,000 dollar transaction removes your only recourse, which is precisely why it gets asked for.

Common Questions

Cost questions

Why are working line puppies more expensive?

The money sits in verification rather than the animal. Hip and elbow certification, a DNA panel, and a cardiac check run several hundred dollars per parent before any breeding takes place. Add a stud fee for proven lines, whelping veterinary care, and the breeder hours behind a properly socialized eight week old, and the price follows from the work.

Are cheaper local litters ever worth considering?

Sometimes, and you apply identical checks either way. A hobby breeder with two well bred dogs and real testing can be an excellent source. The warning signs are not the price, they are missing hip and elbow ratings, no DM result, and a pedigree nobody will let you verify.

What does ten years of ownership cost?

Budget 18,000 to 30,000 dollars for a large working breed across a decade, covering quality food, routine and emergency veterinary care, training, boarding, and equipment. Purchase price is typically under 15 percent of lifetime cost, which is why economizing on testing is poor math.

Is pet insurance worth it for this breed?

Price it before the puppy arrives, since conditions become pre existing once they appear. German Shepherds carry known hip, elbow, and bloat risk, and one bloat surgery can run 5,000 to 8,000 dollars. Compare a policy against self funding the same amount and choose deliberately.

Upcoming litters from documented working lines

Our recommended breeder is Companion Kennels, a small program breeding East German DDR and Czech working lines with published health testing and verifiable pedigrees. Litters are limited and placed from a waitlist.
