The windows that close
The primary socialisation window runs from roughly three to sixteen weeks. Inside it a puppy files new experiences as normal. Outside it, novelty gets evaluated with suspicion, and rebuilding that confidence later takes far longer than building it now.
On a working place you have an advantage: there is genuinely more to meet. Tractors, four wheelers, gates, cattle at a distance, hunting dogs, unfamiliar trucks in the drive. Introduce all of it at a distance the puppy handles calmly, and never flood a young dog to prove a point.
Crate work first
A crate trained dog rides quietly, settles anywhere, and is manageable at a vet, a camp, or a friend place. It also gives a young dog a way to switch off, which a high drive shepherd genuinely needs and rarely chooses on its own.
Build it in month one while it is easy, and it stays easy for a decade.
The four behaviours that carry everything else
Recall. Reliable, first call, under distraction. Build it on a long line for months. Around livestock and game this is the behaviour that keeps your dog alive and your neighbours friendly.
Stop or down at distance. The behaviour recall cannot replace. When a dog is already moving away from you toward something interesting, a stop that works at fifty yards is worth more than a perfect heel.
Place. Go to a spot and hold it until released. This makes a working dog liveable indoors and gives it a job during meals, guests, and deliveries.
Loose lead. An eighty five pound dog that drags you is a dog that stops leaving the property, and a dog that stops getting worked becomes the problem people describe when they rehome a shepherd.
Adolescence, where most owners quit
Around six months the drive switches on and the agreeable puppy starts making its own calls. That is the dog becoming what it was bred to be, on schedule, rather than a training failure.
Expect real testing from six to eighteen months. Hold the rules, keep the work up, and train through it. The uncontrollable two year old people describe is almost always the six month old nobody kept working with.
Sport, and the drive you will actually make
IGP combines tracking, obedience, and protection under a judge and gives a working line dog structure that pet obedience does not. Scent work and rally are gentler entry points and suit the breed well.
In Mississippi, club access usually means travel. Jackson has the most in state, north Mississippi reaches Memphis, the east reaches Alabama, and the coast reaches New Orleans. That drive is part of owning this breed here, so plan it honestly rather than optimistically.

Training questions
When do I introduce the dog to livestock?
Early, on a long line, and deliberately. Never by turning a young dog loose to work it out, which is how chickens die and habits form. Start at a distance the puppy can watch calmly, reward calm, and close the distance over weeks rather than minutes. Prey drive is not disobedience, it is genetics, and it is managed with structure.
How do I introduce gunfire?
At distance, paired with something good, never at close range as a test. Have someone fire a long way off while the dog eats or plays, and close the gap gradually across sessions. A well bred working line dog has the nerve for it. A careless first exposure can still create a lasting sound sensitivity that was never genetic.
Will a German Shepherd chase deer?
Without training, very likely. Prey drive plus open ground plus movement is exactly what the breed was selected to respond to. Recall on a long line for months, build a reliable stop or down at distance, and do not trust off lead work around game until the recall holds under real distraction.
Where are the training clubs?
The Jackson metro has the most options in state. North Mississippi handlers often reach toward Memphis, and east Mississippi toward Birmingham or Tuscaloosa. The coast can reach the New Orleans area. Decide honestly whether you will make that drive before buying a dog that needs club work.
Is board and train worth it?
Usually less than people hope. The dog comes back trained for the trainer, and the handoff is where it falls apart. Your consistency between sessions matters more than the quality of any single session, so a weekly class you actually work between beats a month away.
