What to verify, wherever you buy

Region changes the logistics and never the standards. Four checks remove most of the risk and take about a day.

Ask for hip and elbow ratings and a degenerative myelopathy DNA result on both parents. Get the registered names of the sire and dam and search them yourself in a public pedigree database rather than trusting a printed chart. Insist on eight weeks minimum at pickup, since younger puppies miss critical development with the litter. Read the contract for a lifetime return clause, which is the clearest evidence a breeder intends to stand behind the dog.

A breeder who passes all four is worth a long drive. One who fails the first is not worth a short one.

Common Questions

Questions about finding a breeder in Mississippi

How many working line breeders are in Mississippi?

Few, and that is normal rather than a problem. Serious working line programs are small by design, running one to three litters a year from a handful of proven dogs, with most puppies placed from a waitlist before birth. Constant availability signals volume rather than quality.

Should I look outside Mississippi?

Yes, and most buyers here should. Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, and Arkansas breeders are within a day drive of nearly every part of this state, and several Mississippi regions are closer to an out of state program than to an in state one. Compare on standards, not on the state line.

What should I check regardless of region?

Hip and elbow ratings plus a degenerative myelopathy DNA result on both parents, a pedigree you verify yourself in a public database, an eight week minimum pickup age, and a written contract with a lifetime return clause. Those four apply everywhere and eliminate most bad outcomes.

Are German Shepherds restricted anywhere in Mississippi?

No Mississippi county enforces a statewide breed ban on German Shepherds. Restrictions come from private parties instead: subdivision covenants, landlords, and insurance carriers. Those are the documents to read before you place a deposit.

Upcoming litters from documented working lines

Our recommended breeder is Companion Kennels, a small program breeding East German DDR and Czech working lines with published health testing and verifiable pedigrees. Litters are limited and placed from a waitlist.
